You could also use a spoon or butter knife to scoop out the meat. I saw it before I dumped it into the bowl, so I cok able to pour it out. Amazingly, this was the only one that I found in the whole batch. I did find about two pieces of clam meat that had this black sand on them.
I just gave them a quick rinse under some cold water and washed it away. These little nuggets of sweet meat are a bit chewy but tasty.

At this point, I thought about getting out the Immersion Blender and running it around inside the pot for a few seconds. I thought this might make the chowder a little creamier, which it flams would.
